Setting up a Raspberry Pi as your PLC

Physical Setup

Equipment List

• Raspberry Pi 4

  Here we are using a Raspberry Pi 4 as our PLC.

• Raspberry Pi Enclosure with din rail mount

  Allows Raspberry Pi to be mounted to the din rail along side other control components.

• Industrial ethernet switch

  An industrial ethernet switch that has terminals for 24 VDC power supply. The switch in the example is an unmanaged type

• 24 VDC power supply

  Common supply voltage for industrial control cabinets.

• 24 VDC to 5 VDC DC-DC Converter

  Raspberry Pi runs on 5 VDC. Too use a single power supply, we used a 24 VDC to 5 VDC DC-DC converter.

• USB-C Pigtail

  Power cable for the Pi

• Ethernet Cables

  Ethernet cables to connect the Raspberry Pi and Ethernet/IP devices to the network switch.

• Ethernet/IP Device to be controlled

  In the example, we use a Allen Bradley E1 Plus overload relay with the Ethernet/IP adapter.

• Din Rail

  Allows us to mount all our devices that we would normally install in a control cabinet.
